A new solar powered car called Zem is revolutionary. The sporty prototype cleans carbon dioxide from the air while it drives, and the car's body frame is 3D-printed, cutting production emissions. Everything about it makes the prototype good for the environment. To add to that, the interior is fitted out in vegan leather made from pineapples.

The car was designed and made by a team of 35 students from the Eindhoven University in the Netherlands. The goal of the 2021 project was: zero emissions mobility. The motto gave the car its name: Zem.

The team has important sponsors, like the Dutch company Cleantron, supplying lithium ion batteries, and solar panels from Wattlab.

The two filters beneath the car do capture carbon dioxide , but only at a small scale. As air passes through the filters, a special grain is used to capture the carbon dioxide. Every 200 miles the filter has to be emptied, so the students designed a charging station, from which the CO2 would be extracted. Only 0.04% of the cars yearly emissions are captured. Unfortunately, 3D printed vehicles are not allowed to drive on the road, but in the future it could be possible.
