In a major shift in Syria’s ongoing conflict, the former Prime Minister of Syria under the Assad regime has agreed to transfer power to his rebel counterpart. Mohammad Ghazi Al-Jalali, the outgoing Prime Minister, confirmed the decision in an interview with Al Arabiya TV, as reported by Reuters. This development marks a significant milestone in the power dynamics within the country, which has been embroiled in civil war for over a decade. The Syrian rebels, who have been fighting against the Assad regime since the early days of the conflict, shared a video showing a meeting between Al-Jalali and Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the leader of the main rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The footage was made public as part of an effort to highlight the coordination between the former Assad official and the rebels. According to rebel sources, the purpose of the meeting was to "coordinate the transfer of power in a manner that ensures the provision of services to our people in Syria." This suggests that the power handover is not just symbolic but is intended to have practical implications, with a focus on maintaining stability and providing essential services in the areas under rebel control. The agreement comes at a time when Syria remains in deep uncertainty, with significant parts of the country under the control of the main rebel group HTS.

After less than 2 weeks of fighting across Syria's northwest, rebel groups seized control of the country's capital, Damascus. Their presence caught Syrian president Bashar al-Assad off guard, forcing him to flee to Moscow, Russia, along with his family.
The fall of the Assad regime following more than 50 years of brutal dictatorship was a "victoryfor the entire Islamic nation," said Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the leader of the main rebel group, HTS, which was formed out of an al Qaeda affiliate.
Assad's removal was met with jubilation by Syrians at home and abroad. In Damascus, rebels and civilians ransacked the former dictator's palaces, with videos revealing Assad's luxurious lifestyle and large car collection, including a Ferrari F50.
