On Monday, US-President Joe Biden said that a drone strike had killed terrorist group al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Zawahiri had just turned 71 years old, and was in Kabul to reunite with his family. He had been Osama bin Laden's personal physician. 11 years ago bin Laden was killed by the US. The strike was part of a counter-terrorist attack. Two missiles fired into al-Zawahiri house, instantly killing him. The al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri had orchestrated 9/11, and was for a long time part of the most wanted terrorists. The house had been in the Sherpur area. "Now, justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more. People around the world no longer need to fear the vicious and determined killer," Biden said. "The United States continues to demonstrate our resolve and our capacity to defend the American people against those who seek to do us harm. We make it clear again tonight, that no matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to our people, the United States will find you and take you out." The attack had been planned for months. One year ago the US had left Afghanistan, handing the country over to the Taliban. Biden pledged that Afghanistan would no longer become a safe haven for terrorists. The Taliban had actually promised to let no al-Qaeda members into the country, but they had, as the strike shows. The strike on al-Zawahiri brings a new question with it - who will be the next leader of al-Qaeda? The Number 2 of the terrorist group, Saif al-Adel is currently located in Iran, though a former official of the government of Afghanistan said al-Adel had already left for Afghanistan. Al-Zawahiri comes from an Egyptian family, making his first big public appearance by being part of the assassination of the Egyptian President in 1981. Al-Zawahiri had at the time been a doctor, dreaming of overthrowing the Egyptian Government because they had made peace with Israel. When he was working in Afghanistan, treating wounded fighters who were battling against Soviet soldiers, he met Osama bin Laden. After that bin Ladin and al-Zawahiri were a team, killing Americans. 9/11 families have expressed their gratitude to Joe Biden.
The drone strike has rocked the city of Kabul.
The people in the city are quiet, but the news is big.
