A picture of Adolf Hitler, dramatic music 🎶 and a voice that sounds like Hitler reproduces one of his speeches - but in English. I have just described a Tik-Tok video for you: an AI voice has created the English voice of Hitler, and the  post is titled: "Just listen".

In English, the words include: "I did not have a bomb dropped on Paris. Before we attacked Warsaw, I asked for surrender five times. Everything was rejected! I asked that they should at least send the women and children out. (...) Everything was rejected and only then did I decide to do what is permissible under every law of war."

The audio excerpt is actually the exact translation of a Hitler speech from November 8, 1942 in the Munich Löwenbräukeller. In this speech, the mass murderer claims to have complied with martial law and proclaims the "Extermination of Judaism in Europe", but the latter statement cannot be heard in the video.  Although the video was deleted, it reached over 1 million views and 120,000 likes. The people who saw the video were very influenced by it, with some writing in the comments, for example, "This changed my view of him," or "maybe he's not such a criminal after all," as can be seen in screenshots from the left-wing non-profit organization Media Matters for America.

Nevertheless, video clips with Hitler's voice go extremely viral on Tik-Tok, YouTube or X (formerly Twitter). Most of the time, excerpts of real speeches are placed over quiet, modern music so that the algorithm doesn't immediately take the videos down. With the help of AI, Hitler's voice is cloned and the speeches can be quickly translated into other languages, so a channel can create mass videos.  The simple use of artificial intelligence in particular is accelerating the spread of anti-Semitic content on the Internet, the aim of which is to radicalise young people.

On Tik-Tok, it is very easy to spread such videos. For example, you can "repost" a video, i.e. publish it again, so it reaches your friends. The "sound" function makes it possible to use the sound of a video in your own video. In mid-September, there were over 70,000 posts with Nazi speeches or Nazi marching music on Tik-Tok. They were liked over 21 million times. However, the video clips regularly violate the Tik-Tok community guidelines, which explicitly prohibit the "promotion of hateful ideologies" or the defamation of mass murderers.  In addition, AI-generated content must be marked on Tik-Tok.

But the creators of these videos trick the automatic systems: The videos mostly talk about "the great painter" or "the Austrian painter", an allusion to his failed career as an artist. A quick identification of these posts is therefore not possible.
