US President Trump just announced that he has nominated the now-former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz as UN ambassador. Marco Rubio is now going to serve as both Secretary of State and interim National Security Advisor.
“Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department.”
Just before the news came in, Waltz was already speculated to depart from his post of National Security advisor.
Waltz has already been on shaky ground following the chat group incident, which involved him adding a journalist to a chat on US military strikes that contained government officials.
The deputy national security adviser, Alex Wong, and other national security advisers are also expected to depart, per multiple sources familiar with conversations, though timing is unclear.
It’s not the first time Rubio has been suddenly asked to fill a vacancy in Trump’s administration. In February, Trump dismissed National Archivist Colleen Shogan, later naming Rubio to fill the role.
In the same month, Trump appointed Rubio as the acting administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) — an agency he plans to close as part of the administration's initiative to reduce spending.
Waltz is "deeply honored"
Waltz said he is still "deeply honored" to serve president Trump, as he is being nominated as US ambassador to the United Nations by the president.
“I’m deeply honored to continue my service to President Trump and our great nation,” Waltz wrote on X.
Donald Trump informed outgoing national security advisor Mike Waltz that he would be removing him from his role this morning.
