Since 2️⃣🅾️1️⃣7️⃣, a pair of orcas have been killing great white sharks 🦈 along the coast of South Africa. Scientists have been puzzled by the hunting behavior of the whales 🐳, but this could mean something new for the marine ecosystem.

Last year, scientists managed to witness a male orca kill a 2.5m long white shark within two minutes.

"Over two decades of annual visits to South Africa, I've observed the profound impact these killer whales have on the local white shark population Seeing Starboard carry a white shark's liver past our vessel is unforgettable," said Dr. Primo Micarelli, a marine biologist at Italy's Sharks Studies Centre and the University of Siena, who was aboard one of two vessels from which researchers observed the attack.

Orcas are smart and social animals, so it's not unusual for them to hunt in packs, but this is the first attack on a great white. Scientists are becoming concerned about the coastal marine ecology balance. Previous attacks by orcas on great whites were only by 2-6 whales and took up to 2 hours. The orca named Starboard ⭐️ has formed a duo with another orca, Port. They have been hunting sharks 🦈 since 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣5️⃣, scientists say, and travel up to the coast of Namibia. Scientist Towner states:

"While we don't have solidevidence on the specific driversthe arrival of the killer whale paircould be linked to broaderchanges in the ecosystem. ""It's clear thathuman activities, such as climatechange and industrial fishing arestressing our oceans. To fullygrasp these dynamics, additionalresearch and funding areessential."

This shark hunting is scaring the population of great whites away and causing them to relocate, possibly into the areas of the big fishing 🎣 industries. This shows just how fast 🏃‍♂️ orcas learn new hunting techniques and adapt to environments. Researchers are struggling to keep up with these big changes. This just shows how sophisticated orcas are, but what do you think about this? Write ✍️  a comment 👍 and let me know.
