Sunday was the hottest day in recorded history, according to data from a climate tracking agency that has been tracking worldwide temperatures since the mid-1900s.

In the last year, global temperatures have crashed through climate records in a worrying fashion. This trend will continue due to climate change because of pollution. July 21's global average surface air temperature was 17.09 degrees celsius warm, or 62.76 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the data from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, it was the hottest day on earth since the measurements in 1940 began. Temperature records are typically broken in small fashion, and Sunday's temperature was 0.1 degrees hotter than 2023's record.

"We are now in truly uncharted territory and as the climate keeps warming, we are bound to see new records being broken in future months and years," said Carlo Buontempo, director of Copernicus. These recent records are "truly straggering," Buontempo said. "We are now in truly uncharted territory and as the climate keeps warming, we are bound to see new records being broken in future months and years."
