Diogo Jota and his brother were driving a neon-green Lamborghini Huracán on Highway 52 near the municipality of Cernadilla at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday. When a tire burst while overtaking, the vehicle overturned and burst into flames. Jota and his brother were burned beyond recognition, and their remains were taken to a forensic institute.

This is how the football world reacts:

Liverpool FC said everyone was "shocked by the tragic death of Diogo Jota ." The club asked for "the privacy of Diogo and André's family, friends, teammates, and club staff to be respected as they try to cope with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to offer them our full support."

Liverpool coach Arne Slot praised Jota as an exemplary professional, but above all as an extraordinary person. "He was friends with everyone. Someone who made others feel good just by being with them. A person who cared deeply about his family," said the Dutchman.

Klopp honored Jota not only as a player, but also as a person. "Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father," the former Liverpool coach continued. The emotional farewell ended with the words: "All my prayers, thoughts, and strength to Rute, the children, the family, the friends, and everyone who loved her. Rest in peace – With love, J."

FIFA President Gianni Infantino wrote on the world governing body's X channel: "At just 28 years old, Diogo Jota had a fantastic career behind him and many more great years ahead of him, while his brother André enjoyed success at Penafiel FC - both will be sorely missed by all who knew them and the global football community."

On behalf of FIFA and the entire football family, his thoughts are with "their family and friends, as well as all the staff of Liverpool FC, Penafiel FC and the Portuguese Football Federation. May they rest in peace."

"That doesn't make sense. We were just on the national team together, and you got married. I send my deepest condolences to your family, your wife, and your children, and wish you all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will miss you all."

Only been in the car because of lung surgery

According to media reports, Jota, whose full name was Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, wanted to take a ferry from Spain to Great Britain. He could have also taken the plane, but his doctors advised against it after minor lung surgery due to pressure fluctuations.

Over the course of his career, he played for several top clubs, including Wolverhampton, FC Porto, Atletico Madrid, and finally Liverpool FC. As a center forward, he shot his way into the heart of the Reds, winning the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Premier League this season. He even managed to win two Nations League trophies with Portugal, the most recent of which he recently lifted in the final against Spain. Diogo Jota married just two weeks ago and leaves behind his wife and three children. Jota was 28 years old.
